Taste tests
Phil Lempert, the Supermarket Guru, conducted a blind taste test of four egg substitutes, along with whole scrambled eggs and scrambled egg whites.

It’s no surprise that whole eggs won. Runners-up in descending order: Egg Beaters, scrambled egg whites, Second Nature, Better’n Eggs, and Chef’s Eggs. Some tasters felt the flavor of Second Nature was “pretty good” but others complained about a “chalky aftertaste.”

Lempert notes a large egg has 5 grams of fat and 210 milligrams of cholesterol. Substitutes made of egg white, food starch, and non-fat milk have no fat.

Lempert gives thumbs up to another low fat product: Mrs. Malibu’s 92% Fat-Free Peanut Better™ spreads. A gourmet concoction made from fresh-roasted peanuts, it comes in three flavors—Chocolate Chunk, Very Berry Blast, and Regular.

Two tablespoons of Mrs. Malibu’s spread contain 2.5 grams of fat. The same amount of regular peanut butter contains 17 grams of fat.

USA Today taste testers declared Planters’ Reduced Fat Honey Roasted Peanuts a winner among new products. One-third cup contains 7 grams of fat, compared to 13 grams of fat for regular peanuts.

Land O’Lakes Fat-Free Half & Half sounds like an oxymoron, right? Only the cook will know that this fat-free product replaced the usual rich and creamy whole milk or cream. Land O' Lakes is made mostly of skim milk, corn syrup and a small amount of carrageenan as thickener.
